Yamaha Tenere 700 (2019-2025): 10 Problems Owners Have Reported
Important notice before you read. Everything below is collected from owner forums (tenere700.net, ADVrider), published long-term reviews, and official NHTSA / Yamaha recall records. None of this reflects my personal opinion or my own experience with the bike. Many of these problems are exceptions, not the rule, and the Tenere 700 has earned a reputation as one of the most capable mid-displacement adventure bikes ever made. But it carries three documented safety recalls you should know about before buying.
TL;DR
- The Tenere 700 launched in Europe in 2019, in the UK and Australia in 2020, and in the USA in 2021. The World Raid variant arrived in 2022; the standard model received a major TFT and electronics update in 2024.
- Three formal safety recalls have been issued on the platform: a 2022 front brake caliper bolt recall (NHTSA 23V-472, 211 units), a 2022 World Raid fuel tank leak recall (XTZ 690D), and a 2023-2024 clutch drag recall affecting production from Dec 2022 to Oct 2024.
- Beyond the recalls, the recurring complaints are platform-character : snatchy throttle, mid-range handlebar vibration, soft suspension under load, and the well-known small windscreen.
The Yamaha Tenere 700 is built around the 689 cc CP2 parallel-twin shared with the MT-07 - 73 hp at 9,000 rpm, 68 Nm of torque, 875 mm seat height, 240 mm ground clearance, 16 L tank, 21-inch front wheel. It’s been in continuous production since 2019 (Europe) and 2021 (USA), with a World Raid variant added in 2022 and major TFT and electronics updates in 2024.
It’s earned its reputation as one of the most capable mid-displacement adventure bikes on sale. But every long-running platform has its quirks, and the T7 has three documented formal recalls that matter for used buyers. Below are 10 issues drawn from tenere700.net, ADVrider’s Tenere 700 problem thread, published long-term reviews, and the NHTSA / Yamaha recall databases - each tagged with the model year(s) affected. Sources are listed under every section.

1. Snatchy off-idle throttle response (2019-2025, shared CP2 character)
The Tenere 700 inherits the CP2 engine’s well-known off-idle throttle abruptness from the MT-07 platform. Below 3,000 rpm the response is jerky, especially picking up the throttle after a closed-throttle in slow tarmac riding or technical off-road. It’s the same root cause as on the MT-07 - EPA-mandated zero-throttle fuel cutoff - and the same fixes apply : BoosterPlug or Throttle Tamer hardware modules, or an ECU flash. Notable on all years from 2019 to 2025.
Severity: low to moderate. Character trait. Aftermarket fixes are mature.

2. Handlebar vibration at 5,000-5,500 rpm (2019-2025, right grip especially)
The CP2’s crossplane parallel-twin firing order creates a buzz that peaks around 5,000-5,500 rpm - exactly where the bike sits at sustained 110-120 km/h cruising. Owners on tenere700.net and ADVrider consistently report that the right grip transmits more vibration than the left, sometimes enough to numb the hand on long stretches. The issue spans 2019-2025. Heavier bar-end weights, anti-vibration risers, and gel grip covers are the standard community fixes.
Severity: low to moderate. Character trait of the CP2 motor. Easy mitigations exist.

3. Bouncing headlight bracket and dash wobble (2019-2023 most reported)
The rally-style headlight tower on 2019-2023 Tenere 700 standard models is mounted on rubber isolators that can become floppy after a year or two of off-road use, causing the whole headlight assembly and dash to bounce on rough surfaces. tenere700.net has a popular DIY-fix thread; aftermarket anti-vibration brackets are widely sold. The 2024+ electronics update with the new TFT addressed dashboard mounting but the lower headlight bracket can still wobble.
👉 Try the Yamaha Tenere 700 on the Goutchen seat-height simulator before you commit.
Severity: low to moderate. DIY-fixable.

4. Small stock windscreen and wind buffeting (2019-2025 standard model; World Raid improved)
The stock screen on the 2019-2025 standard Tenere 700 is small and rally-styled - effective at not cluttering the sightline off-road, much less effective at deflecting wind on the motorway. tenere700.net has a long-running discussion on buffeting and screen upgrades. The 2022+ World Raid variant ships with a taller screen and improves wind protection meaningfully. Aftermarket touring screens (MRA, Puig, Givi) are the common fix on the standard model.
Severity: low to moderate. Plan an aftermarket screen if you tour at speed.

5. Heated grip and throttle tube glue (2019-2022 most reported)
A specific complaint on early model years : the throttle tube on 2019-2022 Tenere 700 models, especially when fitted with the Yamaha-accessory heated grips, can lose its glued bond to the rubber grip itself. The result is the rubber grip rotating loose on the throttle tube while you twist. Yamaha dealers have replaced the grips under warranty in many reported cases. The 2023+ assembly process appears to have addressed it.
Severity: moderate. Get it replaced under warranty if it happens.

6. Soft fork that bottoms with luggage (2019-2025 standard model)
The 43 mm KYB upside-down fork on the 2019-2025 standard Tenere 700 is sprung for a solo rider of modest weight. Add a top box, panniers and a passenger, and the front dives heavily under braking and bottoms on rough off-road sections. The 2022+ World Raid uses revised fork internals and rear KYB shock - it tolerates load notably better. On the standard model, fork seal upgrades, stiffer springs from Touratech / TEC / YSS, and an aftermarket cartridge kit are popular fixes.
Severity: moderate. Setup-dependent and upgradeable.

7. Rear shock undersprung for heavier riders (2019-2025 standard model)
Same story at the back. The stock rear shock on 2019-2025 standard Tenere 700 models is preload-adjustable only and tuned for a sub-75 kg solo rider. Anyone heavier, or any two-up touring setup, will note the rear sags and rebounds aggressively. Touratech’s Explore HP rear shock and Wilbers / Öhlins replacements are common upgrades for owners who carry weight or ride two-up.
Severity: moderate. Upgradeable with a proper shock for €600-1,200.

8. 2022 front brake caliper bolt recall (NHTSA 23V-472)
A genuine safety recall. In July 2023, Yamaha announced a recall affecting 211 units of the 2022 Tenere 700 (XTZ7N) for front brake caliper bolts that may have been assembled with incorrect thread length - 20 mm threads on a 40 mm bolt, when the spec called for a different combination. The wrong bolts can damage caliper mounting threads on removal/refit, and in the worst case the caliper can detach from its mount during braking. Yamaha campaign 990168, NHTSA campaign 23V-472. Owner notification letters went out July 20-24, 2023. Dealers inspect and replace bolts (and the caliper if threads are damaged) free of charge. Symptom to watch for : a clunking sound or feel from the front brake under light application.
Severity: high. Verify the recall is closed on the VIN before buying a 2022 model used.

9. 2022 Tenere 700 World Raid fuel tank leak recall (XTZ 690D)
The most serious recall on the platform. Tenere 700 World Raid (XTZ 690D) units manufactured June 2022 to March 2023 have a fault that can cause the right-side fuel tank to leak fuel onto the road - both a fire/slip hazard for following traffic and an environmental issue. The EU rapid alert system (Safety Gate) and CCPC Ireland issued public consumer warnings. ADVrider reports Yamaha issued a “Stop Ride Order” pending dealer fix. If you own or are considering a 2022-2023 World Raid, verify the recall has been carried out before riding.
Severity: critical. Stop-ride-level issue until verified at a dealer.

10. 2023-2024 clutch drag recall (Yamaha campaign 5568)
The most-recent safety recall on the platform. Yamaha announced an international recall in November 2024 affecting MT-07, XSR700, Tracer 7 and Tenere 700 motorcycles manufactured between December 1, 2022 and October 26, 2024. The cause : an anti-corrosion agent applied to clutch steel discs since December 2022 can react with friction-plate material under heat to form a viscous substance, causing the clutch to fail to disengage fully. Risk : the bike can move off from a standstill with the gear engaged even with the clutch lever pulled, losing rider control. Yamaha notification number 5568, dated 5 November 2024. The remedy is replacement of clutch steel and friction discs at no cost. The US rollout began in 2025.
Severity: critical. Hits 2023-2024 Tenere 700s. Schedule the recall fix at your dealer.

So, should you still buy a Yamaha Tenere 700?
Yes, with conditions. The T7 has earned its reputation as one of the most capable, well-rounded mid-displacement adventure bikes on sale, and the underlying engine and chassis are genuinely good. 2019-2021 owners report well over 75,000 miles of trouble-free use when serviced properly.
What’s changed in the last two years is that the platform now carries three formal recalls. If you’re shopping used :
- 2019-2021 Tenere 700: no formal recalls. Verify suspension and headlight bracket condition.
- 2022 Tenere 700 standard: check the front brake caliper bolt recall (NHTSA 23V-472) has been done.
- 2022-2023 Tenere 700 World Raid: confirm the fuel tank recall is closed. Don’t ride one until you know.
- 2023-2024 Tenere 700 (any variant): schedule the clutch recall (Yamaha campaign 5568) at your dealer.
- 2025 Tenere 700 new from a dealer: all known recalls addressed at the factory or pre-delivery.
The character traits (throttle, vibration, suspension setup) are platform-wide and shared with the MT-07 family - see our Yamaha MT-07 problems by year post for the engine-shared issues.
